In this article without spoiling we review, Dorsale Films created ‘MANNEQUIN’- a French Psychological Horror Short with English Subtitles released on June 22nd 2019 on YouTube & Vimeo (Links provided in this article). Written, Directed and Story by David Teixeira Also, Starring & Story inputs by Lea N’Kaoua. Original Music by Mise Darling. Additional Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)
Barbara is going to visit her niece for her birthday but she didn’t found time to buy her a present. Her sister Julia found the perfect present and she bought it for her: a mannequin doll. After a long day, Barbara decides to spend the night at a Hotel, before heading up to see the family.
The movie may start off as a normal movie with some slasher horror vibes but soon, we see that it also feels somewhat like Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho as there’s indeed a bathing scene as we see in the trailer. There’s no full nudity during the bath, there are some swear words which are highlighted even more thanks to the subtitles. The French here, is fluent and fast, so it may take additional attention to understand for non-native French speaker.
The concept is unique as it’s not a typical doll killer horror movie. It’s about a creepy Barbie and feels like Annabelle and less like Chucky (Child’s Play)… The quality is great for an indie, with acting, video, audio and everything feeling professional.
This movie could have been better if it had some kind of epilogue explaining the reason behind the incident and perhaps, a police investigation scene too like Dexter. There’s also not much background details available about the characters except what we get in the synopsis. The good thing is that the acting and even text messages provide us with more details and some character development.
Overall, It’s a good movie with French audio and English subtitles but it’s fine as all the emotions are conveyed perfectly which didn’t make me want to have English audio because acting conveyed perfect emotions, subtitles were accurate and never distracted from the visuals… It’s pretty short with 9 minutes in total but the effect it leaves on you might be for more than 9 minutes..
The director has created a truly psychological horror as there’s no violence but blood, confusion and pain. A well made experimental horror short movie. You will keep thinking about possible theories behind the incident and also you might want to check twice before you buy a doll as a gift for a kid. I guess gifting video games or books would be better to keep the creepy dolls at bay.
