Why Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999) is still a classic horror masterpiece (Review)

Ichabod Crane, a police detective, is sent from the city of New York to Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of murders committed by the Headless Horseman.

We tell you why you need to watch this again….

The creepy unpredictable story

The premise is not as predictable as it may sound. There’s no clue of whether the headless horseman is real or not, and the possibility of our protagonists’ success in uncovering the mystery is vague, so you’ll never know what’s coming.

Simple yet haunting effects

The special effects are simple yet professionally made. They might not be the giant scale or modern CGI effects like Scooby Doo or say, Conjuring Universe movies but they’re beautiful and blend well with the movie’s theme and historical setting.

Subtle horror

This movie doesn’t rely on jump scars. That’s the beauty of the direction and writing. The scenes make sure that you brace for an impact and when the scary scenes actually happen, you will be scared to the bones.

Fantastic cast & crew

The cast was young and moderately experienced. With Johnny Depp in his dawn of the acting career and without much controversy as he’s now, regardless of your opinion about him, you can definitely tell that this is one of the most balanced and mature performance by him. Other cast and crew performed so well that they went on to have a successful career ahead of them. Not to mention, this movie is a jewel in the crown of Tim Burton’s directorial career.

An ending that will make you want more….

A movie which makes you feel like you want to see more is a good movie. This movie might feel dull during some parts of the beginning but as the things start happening and the story unfolds, you become involved in the world of this movie. As the movie ends, you will feel satisfied, yet won’t mind watching this movie again.

Thus, it is a Tim Burton classic which truly deserves a place in your Blu-Ray collection. If you haven’t watched it yet, I strongly suggest you to give it a go. You will not be disappointed.

  1. My all time favorite Tim Burton film, besides the legendary Nightmare Before Christmas. But every year this movie has to be watched. And I found the original soundtrack on CD, and this Tuesday there releasing a 20th Anniversary Blu-ray for this film!
