DISTRAINT – Pixel Horror Game Review

DISTRAINT is a pixelated horror game developed by Jesse Makkonen. Released first on Steam, October 21 2015. And is now available on Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch as of September 2019.

“In order to secure a partnership in a famous company, Price seizes the property of an elderly woman. In that very moment, he finds out the price of his humanity.”

I’ve known about Jesse Makkonen Games since his first release of Silence of the Sleep. Where you play a man named Jacob Reeves, who has lost his reason to live. He throws himself into a blackness to end his misery, but instead of it being the end he wakes up without a memory of his life before.

It’s another side scrolling 2D, with digitally drawn graphics. It’s both challenging and puzzling, but it’s worth the story alone. But back to DISTRAINT, Jesse wastes no time making this game quick and yet fun. With a few easter eggs thrown in as well, well maybe just one little easter egg.

Your Parents Get Worried, Better Listen to There Advice.

Deep story, where a man has to get three clients out of their buildings. But it’s not always a easy decision, sometimes it even takes a lot to allow us (in real life) to even feel for others. Nightmares come about, but it’s also a bigger story from within. Just look at your three bosses, they want you to succeed, they want you. To become one of them, the question is do you want to dance to their tune?

Consequences happen, just like in real life. But it’s all part of the Distraint story, unfortunately there’s no paths to really pick. But at the end of it all, you may start to wonder what you see is actually what you’re looking at.

Once you reach the ending, it comes full circle and hits you. It’s a great take on what reality can do to someone that has to make difficult decisions, while all trying to please their bosses and make a name for themselves. Sometimes, it could even come back to haunt you.

Distraint is a game for those looking for a strong story, versus being terrified. It can pull at your heart strings a bit, but at the end of the game. You are what you’ve wanted to be.
