Spoiler-Free Review:

Angelica Reigns is a comic book which might feel like a common superhero comic from the cover art but it has a blend of horror, Harry Potter-like friendship and humor that will connect with today’s audience. The first issue introduces the characters of the comic series and gives us a glimpse of the dark world of the comic.

Angelica lives with her friend Brie and also has a boyfriend, Josue. They all seem to have some magical powers which are revealed slowly in an effective manner. We see the relationships and their friendship bond through well written dialogues and situations. You will immediately like the characters as the artwork, designs are realistic, while still keeping the charm of being like an animated series similar to that of DC’s Batman. There are antagonists and soon, the plot becomes dark and serious while still leaving a room for some light moments.  Our main trio then get the spotlight as there’s danger looming over them as well as the human world while they try to figure out how to stop the antagonists and more importantly how to work together despite unwanted consequences.

The comic isn’t made for kids and you get the idea from the opening sequence. There’s a satisfying amount of gore, blood and scary atmosphere for horror fans. It’s sparingly used and done only when needed. There’s no full nudity or swear words, so, it’s a pure horror comic with some superhero and sci-fi elements. It is realistic enough to be believable and avoids being just another magic related comic. The 32 pages were satisfying for the price and there are posters and sample pages of the other horror comics by the publisher included, so, it’s a treat for the horror fans to see different art styles and story concepts featured in the same comic book.

Overall, Angelica Reigns is an entertaining horror comic series with great characters, beautiful art style and satisfying story that doesn’t feel rushed. The issue #1 makes you interested in the story as well as the characters, so it’s a nice starting point to get into the comic series. The #2 is also a nice follow-up to this story, here’s our review of issue #2: Spoiler-Free Comic Book Review: Angelica Reigns #2 “An action packed follow-up to the magical horror adventure”
