Experience survival horror like never before in the 8th major installment in the Resident Evil franchise – Resident Evil Village. With detailed graphics, intense first-person action and masterful storytelling, the terror has never felt more realistic.
Every Resident Evil major numbered release has its own special innovations and sometimes it is at least in terms of story or addition of gameplay (Like RE5) instead of taking a new direction (Like RE7). With the upcoming RE8 (Resident Evil Village) official information, screenshots, trailers out and the release date being planned for this year (2021), this article discusses what we can expect from it, and what it really means for the Resident Evil series. The following is a spoiler-free, unbiased, and leaks excluded analysis of the RE8 game before it is released this year (2021)
First Person Horror:
With Resident Evil Village, Capcom has decided to go with the RE7 direction and make it a first person horror game. Many fans were surprised when it happened with RE7 but then it got a widespread critical acclaim, and majority of the fans also thought that it was more close to the “sprit of survival horror” than RE6 or RE5. Expect RE8 to do more innovative story telling and horror tricks with the mastery of first person perspective thanks to the success of RE7.
Here’s a video about some thoughts about the first person perspective surrounding RE7 as many people did think that it didn’t look like a Resident Evil game. I feel that it is still relevant as Capcom once again decided to make a first person RE game-
Hope of the return of familiar characters:
We know that Chris Redfield is back, and the main lead is going to the RE7 fame, Ethan Winters, but there are hints of more familiar characters in RE8. With Trailer 2’s end hinting RE4 merchant-like tone of dialogue, clothing style, and background music, we hope it does bring back merchant, as Europe (A Spanish village) is where Leon also met the Merchant in RE4. If not, it would still be something of a coincidence if not an actual Easter Egg like the one character from RE6 Mercenaries map as seen in this video-
Resident Evil meant zombies and it was among the best zombie gaming brands out there when it came out. But it wasn’t just the zombies even when the classics were made that made the series popular, it was also because of the weird and scary nightmarish enemies like Lickers, Tyrants, and bosses like Nemesis that made Resident Evil games something to be excited about. With RE4, the enemies started being humanoid but they were also mutating. The trend continued with RE5, and RE6. With RE7, we saw the enemies being almost like superhumans instead of plain brainless parasite monsters, and then of course the crude-oil like monsters which gave flashbacks of RE5 were also added. But RE8 changes something more than that. Instead of simply branching off from humans and zombies, now the new and popular “werewolves” were introduced. While “witches” were also expected, we don’t think they will be like Left 4 Dead Witch, but more of a story element or some sort of important character too.
RE8 Developer Message:
The best thing about RE4 & RE5 was how they showed the response of the locals to the virus. It all started with viruses, but the locals didn’t know. They were smart people but they did not expect an actual virus to make people turn into zombies. That sad story is seen in the credits of RE4, which still makes me feel sad about the fictional outbreak, and of course, it is something we can relate now with the 2020 outbreak. RE7 felt similarly sad when we think of the family as innocent people who got involved with the virus. RE8 trailers might make you feel like some sort of nonsense is going on when it comes to people chanting something but we have to remember that the villagers were not informed of anything related to the zombies. This virus in RE8 might be a new one with werewolf strain, and thus, making the villagers go back to their age old stories to fight off the werewolves through some sort of ancient technique. Then, perhaps, the folklore of the village shown is at the center of the plot of RE8? In the same way how RE4 village fell to the virus? Only the full game will reveal that!
Chris is back BUT:
Like many people, the news of Chris returning made me feel happy, but with his current mood, it does seem like he’s still having regret and remorse which shadowed Chris’ story in RE6. What we learnt from RE7 Not a Hero, still makes him a hero, but with someone who wants to make things right while also feeling like a bad guy. This could mean trouble or perhaps lead to a twist we may never expect. In any case, Capcom has done a good job of making people excited to know more what’s up with Chris and if we can actually play as him, besides, Ethan.
Sept 2020 Dev Insights:-
It was revealed that RE8 means the end of one character’s story. Many feel that it is Ethan Winters, but what if it is of Chris Redfield’s? It would mean very different things as the game might become the end of an era if Chris’ story is ended (Either happy or otherwise), and then that means the future possible end of many original characters like Ada, Leon, Jill, Claire, etc. which makes way for a reboot. Or, if Ethan’s story is ended, then that means Capcom would go with the route of “New leads with old heroes”, which is like playing an original IP but with some familiar faces to remind you that it’s still the series you know from your childhood.
Overall, Resident Evil Village looks very promising for those looking to play a first person horror, but as for those who want to experience third person horror only, then Resident Evil remakes are still among the best out there. But, it doesn’t really hurt to try out new things, right? Especially when something has a demo. So, be sure to try RE7 demo to know if the first person is for you, then of course, RE8 demo, if they do release it. The story and the characters in RE8 does make it like a game you shouldn’t miss, especially if you have been a long time Resident Evil fan.
The above was a detailed and additional analysis after the initial reaction of the second trailer. Here’s the second trailer reaction:-
A new chapter of survival horror is approaching. Resident Evil Village, the eighth main entry in the Resident Evil series, is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2021!
Taking place a few years after the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Ethan Winters and his wife, Mia, seem to have finally found peace after the horrifying events they endured at the Baker family’s plantation house. Despite putting the past behind them, a surprising yet familiar face returns in the form of Chris Redfield… whose shocking actions ultimately cause Ethan to end up in a mysterious, snow-covered village.
Unlike the claustrophobic hallways of the Baker mansion, Resident Evil Village provides a different kind of terror: The fear of the unknown. Each encounter is another fight for survival, with a first-person perspective making things that much more personal as you chart unknown territory. There’s much more to the village than what you see on the surface.
