Spoiler-Free Review:
Storm Kids Comics, the teens and above horror comics brand by Storm King Comics has successful horror comics in their catalogue like Monica Bleue: A Werewolf Story, The Grimms Town Terror, Stanley’s Ghost & Hyperbreed Sci-fi space horror. 156 pages (Digital Review copy, but listed as 152 pages paperback on Amazon) fully colored John Carpenter Presents Storm Kids Sacred Hearts is a unique take on monster horror along with the inclusion of teen adventure elements without diluting the core horror story. Please read on to know why this is a fun and scary read for teens and above!
The horror comic starts with a flashback of a childbirth in a farm which ends with a strange incident that becomes a crucial story element and is revealed at the right time. Back to the present time, we are introduced to three protagonists who must be in their teenage years. These three teens add humor, positivity and excitement to the story. A girl, and two boys who usually go to the woods to roam around. This time, they’re building a tree house called their “Fort”, and thus they decide to get wood from the woods but end up going to and stealing from the farm which is termed as cursed by the townspeople…
Our protagonists also meet a scary looking farm owner who warns them to never get near the farm and especially never go into the woods for some reason. Because of their habit and familiarity with the woods, they continue to visit the woods, and they end up meeting a very huge man who looks grayish and has red eyes. Almost like a monster or a superhero from some famous Hollywood movie, the weird man actually talked and surprised the teen gang. This changed their lives forever…
The strange man was also wounded and hungry, so the teens returned home and took some supplies back. Upon their return, they bandage him and leave food for him but then we learn that it’s indeed dangerous to be out in the woods at night as told by the strange man. If you think there cannot be something stranger than a huge gray talking monster sized man, then you’ll be surprised at what else the story reveals…
As these rather entertaining events were happening, the town also had strange incidents of murders which puzzled the sheriff. Investigation was going nowhere as the evidence suggested an animal attack but it wasn’t a bear or a cougar but something larger. We get to see some gruesome dead bodies which attests the severity of the threat. We also get to see the exciting investigation that takes us back to the farm, the woods and eventually the place of origin from where the threats are coming at night. An unlikely alliance which forms near the end, and an over the top supernatural fight of the climax makes this among the most exciting comics I have read!
The Horror comic has blood and gore which is appropriate for teenagers and above. There are no suggestive themes, no nudity, and no bad language. The editing and writing makes the comic interesting from the start to the end. Lettering work is neat and helps the readers to have an easier time when going through the comic. The illustrations are vivid, colorful, and dark or scary whenever a scenario requires. This is a treat for horror fans who are teens (12) and above.
In conclusion, John Carpenter Presents Storm Kids Sacred Hearts is a beautifully crafted horror tale that delivers scares, adventure & enjoyment for horror fans 12 and above! It’s an exciting horror adventure comic set in the woods of a creepy town featuring three brave teen protagonists who stumble upon a talking monster and together they solve a mystery that’s terrorizing the townspeople for decades. For any 12 and above horror comic fan, this comic book will entertain, excite and of course, scare them beyond their expectations!
