To be published on February 1st, 2022 by Storm King Comics, John Carpenter’s Night Terrors Sour Candy Horror Graphic Novel / comic is a 108 pages fully colored piece of art written by Kealan Patrick Burke, edited by Sandy King Carpenter with perfect lettering by Janice Chiang which has been brought to life by photorealistic art by Jason Felix! This is an adventure filled and scary story of Phil Pendleton, a man whose life literally changes after he meets a noisy kid and his mother at a Walmart… We tell you why it’s a must have in your collection!
Four months to the day he first encountered the boy at Walmart, the last of Phil Pendelton’s teeth fell out.
At first glance, Phil Pendleton and his son Adam are just an ordinary father and son, no different from any other. Some might say the father is a little too accommodating given the lack of discipline when the child loses his temper in public. Some might say he spoils his son by allowing him to set his own bedtimes and eat candy whenever he wants. Some might say that such leniency is starting to take its toll on the father, given how his health has declined.
What no one knows is that Phil is a prisoner, and that up until a few weeks ago and a chance encounter at a grocery store, he had never seen the child before. But now Adam is in his life, altering and controlling it, and it will take a particular kind of horror to get him out. Because there is nothing ordinary about Adam, or the monsters that come when he calls.
It’s a normal weekend morning for a normal looking guy, Phil Pendleton. Waking up from his sleep and making his way to do some chores and other work he reserved for the weekend. He has a girlfriend called Lori. They both seem happy. Phil goes to the nearest Walmart to buy groceries and other stuff which is where he hears a kid screeching and making a scene. To calm the kid down, Phil gives him a packet of sour candy. His mother eats it with her no teeth mouth. A strange car accident happens and almost kills Phil then he meets two cops who help him reach home but he finds out that the strange kid he met at the Walmart is already at his home and calls him daddy…
Phil starts to realize that the reality has drastically changed after he met this boy named Adam. It is scary and intriguing to observe new events and details uncovering on each page. Phil is trying his best to investigate but the more he tries, the worse things get for him and for others he loves. Like Kealan Patrick Burke said in the preface, this comic is inspired by many horror works but I would say that this feels pretty unique even though it has the best of the material it gets its inspiration from. This story is nothing short of a movie and the art, writing and lettering breathes life to it and makes you want more of such a presentation and story Ifuture (hopefully sequels!)
The horror comic is well written by Kealan Patrick Burke with a superb pace of the story that is full of suspense, character development, some humor, lots of horror, action, adventure, and twists at unexpected times. The dialogues are effective and short with neat lettering by Janice Chiang that ensures a cinematic and uncluttered experience while reading. Jason Felix is such a fantastic artist that the faces in some frames would make you feel like they are photographs imposed on art but you realize that they’re not when you see the bonus free artwork pages included in this comic that show us some art in progress. I had never seen such a remarkable art style. It’s truly marvelous and the art alone makes it worth having in your collection, especially if you are an artist or an appreciator of art. There are rare strong words, very mild suggestive themes at the start but intense horror, realistic blood and gore throughout, thus, the ‘Mature Readers’ rating suggested by the publisher is justified even though it can be handled by teens and above.
Overall, Storm King Comics & John Carpenter’s Night Terrors Sour Candy is a horror graphic novel that scares you, entertains you, makes you laugh and think about reality as well as sanity. It’s a narrative masterpiece that’s made perfect by the photorealistic art, flawless editing and neat lettering!
