Spoiler-Free Review:

Author, podcaster, filmmaker, comic writer and wrestler J. D. Oliva has been making supernatural action novels like The Books of Jericho series, Hawk Hollow, and Harvest Moon. This book is a prequel to the new project that has all the supernatural action horror in it but also combines superhero phenomenon along with magic which is the modern genre “Urban Fantasy”. This is all done in a way that’s believable and makes you enjoy it from the start to the end…

Supernatural superheroes are rare and when we do see them, their stories are cliché or stereotypical. This is different as the author J.D. Oliva has created a thriller action hybrid with added mystery to the world of Immortal.
Jennifer Greywolf was just a kid when it was revealed to her mother that Jennifer is destined to inherit more than material possessions from her father. There was a stone or a Talisman that provided powers to the Greywolf family member who had it. A lot of this is explored in the prequel of this book called Talisman (Available through the Kickstarter) which gives you insights about how brave Jennifer’s mother is.
Now it’s 2019 and Jennifer is left alone with a task to find the meaning behind her family’s inheritance and the mystery of a strange relic called ‘Talisman’. Trying out all of her options, she soon discovers more about the Talisman, her family, the demons and also about herself. Adding a collection of colorful characters and some supernatural beings, the story of Jennifer is full of action, thrills and adventure which is rightfully the focus even though other story arcs show their remarkable presence as well.
We also see the story of The Black Rider, Driscoll, Angel and other significant personalities. The events from the 1800s help to see the root of all the complex situations happening in the present time (2019 onwards). There’s a lot of suspense and supernatural elements included which will keep the horror fans happy.
The dreadful time period between the World War I and World War II is often shown in the chapters featuring 1917 and 1938. It shows a great blend of history and alternate history as events, mainly behind the scenes, are interesting and shocking. But there’s a lot more than that because we get to see the origin of the Greywolf name, Silverwolf and other important things including the thrilling story of John Greywolf whose hunt for The Jade Tiger statue makes him face many challenges and an immortal demon.
The book concludes in an exciting way. There’s a lot of going on and it’s all made easy to follow due to the way chapters are structured. The chapter names are the character names and each chapter starts with a location, a date and a year when the current events are happening. It helps to easily know the context of what’s happening. There is an exclusive sneak peak of the upcoming ‘Golem’ novel too (Obtainable through the Kickstarter). This book is a great read for teens and above.
Overall, J.D. Oliva’s The Immortal is a content & quality filled 332 paged action thriller with supernatural elements which provides an enjoyable story where characters come alive and action keeps you on the edge of your seat thanks to the signature writing style of J.D. Oliva. Highly recommended!
