Comic Review- The Acclaimed Horror Graphic Novel by Emmy® Award Winning Writer Richard T. Wilson – HALLOWEEN GIRL Book One: Promises to Keep

Without spoiling, we review Emmy® Winner Richard T. Wilson’s Halloween Girl Book One: Promises To Keep Paperback (170 Pages) which has been released on October 15th 2022 (just in time for the Halloween 2022) on all major stores including Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Following rave reviews and critical acclaim for Vol 1-4, Richard T. Wilson’s entire Halloween Girl graphic novel series has just been released!

The Emmy® award-winning, writer-filmmaker, describes his latest project as a ‘supernatural odyssey with a healthy dose of reality’. “After all these years, this feels like the first thing I’ve written in a way. I feel like my whole life, I’ve been punching through the darkness like the ‘Halloween Girl’ – but this is the first time I’ve actually written about it!” says Wilson.

What is the ‘Halloween Girl’? An angsty, teen ghost named Charlotte (aka ‘Halloween Girl’) and her wise-cracking, supernatural gal pal, Poe who battle diabolic, secret society, The Hollow for the soul of their hometown Crystal Springs – and their own salvation. Taking its cues from sources as disparate as 70’s horror comics and classic literature, ‘Halloween Girl’ began its life as an acclaimed short film Wilson wrote and directed in 2015 to process his mother’s passing, before spinning off into the award winning sister web series, ‘Under the Flowers.’.

Following the release of the web series, Wilson took a deep dive into the angst-ridden ghost’s world, aided by a group of gifted illustrators from around the world. Early issues were released to critical acclaim, but amidst the joy, Wilson’s life-long battle with an anxiety disorder finally caught up with him.  After seeking help, Wilson says his life has gone from black and white to color, and the ‘Halloween Girl’ reflects that journey.

Muse for the Halloween Girl film, Under the Flowers web series and graphic novel, acclaimed singer-songwriter Charlotte Martin has written an original song to promote the novel, which you can listen to above.  Between Martin’s soulful inspiration and a team of illustrators Wilson describes as ‘heaven sent’, ‘Halloween Girl’ promises to be a supernatural adventure like no other this spooky season – in this world, or beyond.

The entire graphic novel series is now available for order from all comic shops and book stores including Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

‘Death is a lot of damned work’, thinks 18 year old ghost, Charlotte Williams, as she braves the unsettled world of the In-Between. It’s here the rebellious teen finds the clues she so desperately needs in her battle against diabolic, secret society, The Hollow (who took her life, and just happen to be trying to end the world!). With goth ghost bestie, Poe (a strong, hilarious substitute big sister), the pair work to decipher the latest clues to thwart the evil sect at every turn. However, things get hairy when The Hollow kidnap Charlotte’s young son, Luke in retaliation. A devastated Charlotte then suffers with the guilt of screwing up his young life ‘even in death’, before forming a plan with Poe to get him back, and make The Hollow pay. And, along the way, maybe even save the world…

Spoiler-Free Review:

Like a dream that should never end but slowly turning into a nightmare that still leaves you with a smile. Such is the tale envisioned by the Emmy® award winning master storyteller Richard T. Wilson who provides an engrossing and terrifying tale that is a must have in your collection to read and re-read, especially during the Halloween season. Let us share why!

The graphic novel was released as 4 issues that focused on different aspects of the story of the protagonist, Charlotte, who is a ghost yet willing to make things right by fighting evil spirits and find out what happened to her son. Charlotte explores the reason behind the paranormal activities in the town. Fighting giant spiders, trickster spirits and the memories of her tragic past, Charlotte uncovers some of the most surprising revelations that would leave the readers agape. The book is like a bagful of Halloween treats due to the atmosphere, characters and the story revolving around the spooky season even though this tale is a great horror read any time of the year. It’s also suitable for a reader of any age due to non inclusion of unnecessary mature content. The graphic novel is full of scary scenes which would make even the adults shiver. What truly stays with you are the characters which are endearing and the human emotions skillfully embedded into them and the scenarios.

The 4 horror issues have been masterfully combined in a paperback graphic novel and to make things even better, the official soundtrack has been composed by Charlotte Martin to make your reading experience better. The horror graphic novel comes to life thanks to the illustrations which are black and white but still lively and set the horror mood perfectly. The paperback also had the contributions from artists Stephen Mullan, Pietro Vaughan, Wanderer Luna, Charaf Mezioud, and Eleonora Garofolo.

To sum it up, Halloween Girl is not just a horror graphic novel but an artwork in the comic form that tells the story of human emotions and cinematic situations through the ghostly perspective of Charlotte that is unlike anything you have read before!

Highly recommend to own and keep in your collection!
